PRIVACY POLICY
Privacy assurance: The short version
We, your friends at Earthville Institute, are privacy advocates. We aren’t in the business of spamming, tracking, or collecting/sharing/selling personal data. If you give us personal information via this website, we will only use it for the purposes you intend (e.g. signing up for our email list or whatever action you might request).
Some of the software this website relies on makes use of cookies (100% vegan) and log files for standard functionality. If you have a keen interest in privacy issues related to websites, you might enjoy reading the more detailed information below.
Who we are
Earthville Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Colorado, USA.
Our website address is: https://earthvilleinstitute.org.
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to various third-party services (e.g. Gravatar, Disqus) to see if you are using them. Those third-party services’ privacy policies are available at their respective websites.
Media
If you upload images to this website, it’s advisable to avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included, as extra protection for your privacy. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data (and other metadata) from images on the website.
Cookies
We ourselves aren’t into cookies unless they’re the kind we can eat. As for the tech kind, this website is hosted on Squarespace, which makes use of cookies for standard functionality. If you’re interested in how Squarespace uses cookies, you can read their Cookie Policy at https://www.squarespace.com/cookie-policy. Whatever information Squarespace gleans from the cookies they digest would be subject to Squarespace’s Privacy Policy, which you can read at https://www.squarespace.com/privacy.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor had visited the other website.
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website [we’re looking at you, Zuckerberg and Google, among others]. Unfortunately what other websites do is entirely beyond our control.
IP Addresses
If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.
How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so the server software can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users who register on our website (if any), our webhost’s software also stores the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you may be able to request to receive an exported file of any personal data that might have been saved, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we might be obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
Where your data is sent
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
